What to Expect
If you are a completely new pet owner, or just new to the Betsie River Veterinary Clinic, the key to feeling comfortable is knowing what to expect when you arrive. This is a brief summary of our process:
- Before Your Appointment you may be asked to collect any existing medical and vaccination records and/or bring in a small stool sample that can be analyzed for parasites. If you are coming in for any issue other than a routine checkup and vaccinations, it is best to let the office know so they allow enough time for your appointment.
- When you Arrive check in at the reception desk. We will take note your pet’s weight, update any records needed, and direct you to an exam room.
- Medical History will be taken. A staff member will ask a series of questions about your dog or cat’s current health and habits. Subjects will likely include diet, exercise routine, lifestyle, habits, urination and bowel movements and general behavior. If you have any particular concerns or questions, you should bring them up at this point.
- The Veterinarian will perform a physical exam on your pet and ask further questions to assess his or her overall health. If your pet is uncomfortable, your veterinarian may use different techniques to help calm the pet including oral medications if warranted. You are encouraged to provide any information you think will help fill in your pet’s medical story and ask questions.
- Vaccinations and Preventatives may be discussed as the next step. If the Veterinarian recommends medications, she will explain how they work any why they are needed. Costs will be discussed before you commit to any service or product. If vaccinations are needed, some pets do better away from their owners – this will be discussed during your visit and evaluated on a case by case basis.
- Additional Testing and Procedures are discussed if the Veterinarian finds cause to recommended them. We will explain why a service was recommended and what the cost is to determine the next steps.
- At the Conclusion of the Visit you will be asked for payment for today’s services and to make the next appointment. Likely this date will be far in the future, but you can always contact us and change it later. Typically, healthy animals should be seen once or twice a year. More frequent exams may be recommended for puppies and kittens, and senior animals, or those with additional conditions. If any prescription medication has been prescribed and is available in the clinic you can take it with you, otherwise the staff will explain other options to obtain the items.
